3-D Stereo Scanning Services
Detailed Description

Overview

Digital Dreams Entertainment is pleased to offer our 3-D scanning services to you. As part of our Standard Service, we will scan your stereo images and then transfer them in various formats onto a CD-ROM and sent to you along with all of your original images. This CD-ROM contains a variety of methods for viewing your Stereo Pairs including Anaglyph, Stereoview and JPS formats and is only offered by Digital Dreams Entertainment. Just send us your 35mm slides, negatives or prints and we do the rest.

Each CD-ROM is compatible with either Macintosh or PCs with Windows 95 or NT (Mac and ISO 9660 Hybrid). The CD-ROM will include a directory structure for each set of stereo viewing formats. Thumbnail Files are included for easy reference along with separate directories for each type of stereo viewing format. The files on each CD-ROM are in a high-quality JPEG format easily viewed on most computer systems with no additional software necessary. Each viewable image will be 600 pixels in height (click here for sample image of actual size) and its width will vary depending on the aspect ratio of the format being scanned. This resolution is targeted to the stereo photographer and computer hobbyist. Realist format is scanned in at 675 dpi and Nimslo format is scanned in at 1012 dpi. Please contact us with your specifications if you wish to obtain images with higher resolutions or alternate computer file formats.

Now you can enjoy your 3-D images on your home computer with 3-D glasses, stereoscopes or LCD shutterglasses. You can also create your own 3-D stereo files using the Left Eye Image Files and Right Eye Image Files we supply. Turn your home computer into a 3-D viewing center for your family. Print out copies of the Stereoview Files, mount them and pass them around to your friends for viewing with a stereoscope.

With our Optional Products and Services, you may select other unique ways to enjoy your favorite images. We can transform your images into 8x10 Glossies, Iron-on Transfers or Stereoview Glossies as part of our Optional Services. If you need a pair of cardboard framed Red/Blue 3-D Glasses to view your Anaglyphs, we have those as well. If we receive enough interest from our customers, we will offer other 3-D and Virtual Reality supplies (i.e., 3-D shutterglasses for viewing JPS files).

Reasons to Buy

Here are just a few ideas of what can be done with your stereo images residing on your Digital Dreams Entertainment CD-ROM:

Standard Services

Digital Dreams Entertainment's Standard Services include the scanning of your Stereo Pair images, from a variety of formats, transforming them into various 3-D viewing formats and then transferring those files onto a CD-ROM. With every Stereo Pair you send us, we scan both images into our computers and immediately create a Left Eye Image File and a Right Eye Image File. We then take those two files and combine them to create an Anaglyph File, a Holmes-style Stereoview File and a JPS File. After all your Stereo Pairs have been scanned, we create a Thumbnail File that contains smaller images of all your Left Eye Image Files for easy reference. If the number of images exceed the maximum allowed per Thumbnail page, additional Thumbnail Files will be created in their own Thumbnail directory. All files are then written onto a CD-ROM and sent to you along with your originals.

Stereo Pair

A Stereo Pair is considered two images of the same subject that are usually taken at the same time using a stereo or 3-D camera (camera with more than one lens). A Stereo Pair can also be created from a single lens camera by taking a picture and moving the camera a short distance to either side and taking the second picture of the same subject. One of the images represent what the left eye sees and the other image what the right eye sees. When viewed together, a single 3-D image of the subject is perceived to have depth.

We accept Stereo Pairs in the following formats:

  • Slides - Mounted or unmounted strips which do not exceed 7.5 inches in length. Sorry, we do not accept View Master Reels.

  • Negatives - 35mm strips which do not exceed 7.5 inches in length.

  • Prints - Any size less than 8 1/2 by 14 inches. Stereographs accepted.

CD-ROM

Once your stereo pairs are scanned they are used to produce various 3-D image files. These are then written onto a CD-ROM that can be easily read on your PC running Windows95 or NT, as well as, any Macintosh (ISO 9660 Hybrid and Mac). This CD-ROM is an ideal way to archive your precious images and display your images now and forever.

Each file will be stored on the CD-ROM in high-quality JPEG format that can be read by all conventional web browsers and image viewer software that comes standard with most computers. Full size view of all images will easily fill a 17-inch computer monitor. Each image file will vary in size depending on the type of stereo file format used, ranging between 500 KB and 2 MB. Each of the stereo file formats will have its own directory on the CD-ROM for easy reference. Below are the six stereo file formats and descriptions that are standard with each CD-ROM that you will receive.

1) Thumbnail File

This one file, AATHUMBS.JPG, contains small thumbnail images of each Left Eye Image of your Stereo Pair along with its file name used on the CD-ROM. For example, if you supplied 25 Stereo Pairs to be scanned, this file will contain all 25 Left Eye Images and its associated file name. With each order form you can specify up to 4 letters to be used in naming your files (see Naming Convention below for more details).

The Thumbnail file is formatted such that it may be printed out on your printer on standard 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper and used as an index for quick reference of your images.

2) Left Eye Image File

This file contains the Left Eye Image of the Stereo Pair. There is more viewing area on the rightmost side of the image that is not common to the Right Eye Image File. This image is used on the left side of the Holmes-style Stereoview.

3) Right Eye Image File

This file contains the Right Eye Image of the Stereo Pair. There is more viewing area on the leftmost side of the image that is not common to the Left Eye Image File. This image is used on the right side of the Holmes-style Stereoview.

4) Anaglyph File

This file contains a Red/Blue Anaglyph image of your Stereo Pair. You can view this image with any ‘red-on-the-left’ and either ‘blue-’ or ‘green-on-the-right’ 3-D glasses. Special care has been taken by us to properly align your images vertically and horizontally for a pleasing 3-D effect when viewed.

For added effect, we offer an option of Color Choices for this file format (see below).

5) Stereoview File

This file contains a Holmes-style formatted, 200-dpi, parallel view of the Left Eye Image and Right Eye Image that, when printed by you, can then be cut and mounted into a Stereograph. The Left Eye and Right Eye images are 3 1/4 inch in height and a width that varies depending on the aspect ratio of the scanned Stereo Pair. Since the images do not completely fill the 3 1/2 by 7-inch format, a black outline has been added along the oustside edges to be used as guidelines for cutting. Please note that printing these files from most internet browsers produce an image much larger than the 3 1/2 by 7-inch format due to the 200-dpi resolution of the file. Application software that can handle print-formatted files is required to get the desired output dimensions.

For added effect, we offer an option of Color Choices for this file format (see below).

6) JPS File

Simulated JPS Image
Actual JPS Image

This file format is used for those of you who have LCD shutterglasses. With this file and the proper JPS image viewing software, you are able to view your stereo pair in a variety of ways. Even if you do not have LCD shutterglasses, with a click of the mouse you can switch 3-D viewing methods between anaglyphs, side-by-sides, or LCD shutterglasses. You can also switch from color to grayscale, red/blue to red/green anaglyph, parallel to cross-eye, left eye to right eye view, as well as, changing image size or resolution.

Color Choices

You may choose the color option of your Anaglyph and Stereoview Files. We have added this option to enhance viewing of these special files. Since viewing the Anaglyph Files require Red/Blue or Red/Green 3-D Glasses, a Full Color image containing reds, blues and greens are sometimes not very pleasant to look at due to the cancellation of these colors from the glasses. Therefore, we offer either Sepia Tone or Grayscale conversion of your image as an alternative to Full Color. Below are the color options we offer and recommendations we suggest:

  • Full Color - Same color as seen on the Stereo Pair.
  • Not recommended for Anaglyph Files if the images contain reds, blues, or greens.
  • Grayscale - Color taken out, only grays remain resembling Black and White photographs.
  • Recommended for Anaglyph Files.
  • Sepia Tone - Resembles old-style Western photographs with a brownish tint.
  • Recommended for Stereoview Files to emulate vintage stereographs.

Naming Conventions

Each file on the CD-ROM will have its own unique file name to eliminate any duplicate file names in case you wish to combine any number of files into a single directory on your own computer system. As an option, we allow you to choose up to 4 capital letters (‘A’ - ‘Z’) of the alphabet that will be used as the first 4 letters of each individual file name. If you choose not to supply us with any letters, we will use the word ‘SCAN’.

The next 3 characters following the above 4 letters will be numeric starting with ‘001’ and incrementing by one for each subsequent file until the total number of stereo pairs has been reached.

The next letter will be one of those listed below to denote the file format of the image.

File Type Naming Convention

‘A’ = Anaglyph Image Files
‘J’ = JPS Image Files
‘L’ = Left Eye Image Files
‘R’ = Right Eye Image Files
‘S’ = Stereoview Image Files

A file extension will then be added to complete the file name. One of the two file extensions will be used for each file:

‘.JPG’ = All files except for the JPS Image File
‘.JPS’ = JPS Image File only

A few examples:

Example 1: You want to know what file ‘SCAN009S.JPG’ represents?

This will be a Holmes-style Stereoview Image of the 9th stereo pair.

Example 2: You want to make your own cross-eyed view of Stereo Pair 12. Where do you get the files you need?

You will need to retrieve the ‘SCAN012L.JPG’ (the Left Eye Image File) and ‘SCAN012R.JPG’ (the Right Eye Image File).

Example 3: You want to put your Stereo Pair image number 102 up on your web page as a JPS file so people with LCD shutterglasses can view it. What do you do?

Retrieve file ‘SCAN102J.JPS’. The file is ready for viewing.

Optional Products and Services

Digital Dreams Entertainment also offers a way to display your favorite images other than on a computer screen. Once your images have been digitized through our scanning process, we can enlarge it to create a beautiful 8x10 inch Glossy for framing and display, an Iron-on transfer ready for you to wear on your own T-shirt, or a Holmes-Style Stereoview on high gloss paper that can be cut and mounted as a stereograph for viewing in your stereoscope.

We also offer Red/Blue 3-D Glasses in case you do not already own any and wish to view your Anaglyph Files or wish to have more for your whole family and friends to view your images at the same time. Additional CD-ROMs are available when you place your order in case you decide you need a few extra for friends, family, business venture or archiving purposes.

1) 8x10 Glossy

You can pick your favorite image and have it blown up to 8 by 10 inches on high gloss, 8 1/2 by 11 inch photo quality paper. You can specify whether you wish to have either the Left Eye Image File, Right Eye Image File or an Anaglyph File of any Stereo Pair reproduced. You also have an option as to which Color Choice you prefer.

Note that the specified image will result in an image size of 8 by 10 inches which is a 1:1.25 aspect ratio. Since most stereo images do not match this aspect ratio, cropping of the final image will result. We will use our best judgment to choose the proper cropping area. If you have a strong preference of what is important and should not be cropped from the image, please let us know with your order.

2) Iron-on Transfers

You may also choose to have your favorite images worn on a T-shirt. You can choose to use a Left or Right Eye, Anaglyph or Stereoview image printed onto Iron-on Transfers. You may then use an iron and transfer this image directly onto your own T-shirts. The image sent to you will be a mirror image so when transferred onto clothing the image will be then be viewed correctly. These make great gifts for friends and family.

3) Stereoview Glossy

Example of a Holmes-style Stereoview on an 8 by 10 inch glossy shown above. Other Stereoview format choices are shown below.

  • Holmes - Images formatted as 3 1/2 by 7 inches with crop lines (Used for Realist and Nimslo Format aspect ratio)

  • Cabinet - Images formatted as 5 by 7 inches without crop lines (Used for Nimslo and Twin 35mm Portrait Format aspect ratio)

  • View Magic - Images formatted as 6 by 8 inches without crop lines with the Right Eye Image on top and Left Eye Image on the bottom (Used for Twin 35mm Landscape and European Format aspect ratio)

Here is a great way to get a Holmes-style, Cabinet or View Magic formatted Stereoview on high gloss, photo quality paper. The left and right images come on 8 1/2 by 10 inch uncut photo quality paper. We provide a 3 1/2 by 7 inch black outline as guidelines for you to use when cutting for the Holmes-style Stereoview. You simply need to cut around the images for the Cabinet and View Magic Stereoview option. You can also choose to cut out each individual image to the size you wish and attach them to your own mounts for viewing with your stereoscope. The images are scanned in at a much higher resolution than those used for the standard services. We do this to provide a final output resolution of 300-dpi to ensure a high quality print.

You have have an option as to which Color Choice you prefer. The Sepia Tone option adds a unique flair for enhanced viewing pleasure.

4) Red/Blue 3-D Glasses

These are your typical cardboard framed Red/Blue 3-D glasses. They are easily reversed if you wish to have the blue filter over your left eye.

5) Additional CD-ROM

For those of you who wish to receive multiple copies of your CD-ROM, we offer duplication services with your original order. This is great if you plan on providing your images to friends or family members as gifts or offering them for sale.
